2007 Mokuleia TT

Cambio's 20k Mokuleia TT - Thanks Cambio!!!
mokuleia tt

This past Sunday was Cambio's 20k Mokuleia TT, the first race of Hawaii's 2007 cycling season. Of all the races in the season, this one is my favorite as it is flat, fast and not a 40k sufferfest.

My goals for the race were to average about 280 watts and be faster than 40kph. This race was not put on last year, but 2 years ago, at a little shorter distance, I averaged 281 watts and did 40.9kph. Things didn't go as planned...

First off, I can't download my PT data since both of my desktops are broken and I need a serial port to connect the powertap download connection...but, I most likely didn't average in the 280's. I wouldn't be surprised to see about 273ish power...10 watts down from 2 years ago. But at least I did just meet my other goal of 40kph. I took about 14:40 out and about 15:20 back.

My aero position was probably better than 2 years ago, however, it put me into a position where I was really fighting myself over the top of the pedal stroke, so one the way back, my power was really low. What a predicament, get further back, higher in front and lower in back for more pedaling efficeincy...and less aero. Get lower in front and more forward, and pedaling efficiency drops...

The D man did his ride early and luckly for us, took these pictures of us going through:

2007 Mokuleia TT - Mark
Mark did a good ride at 30:45.

2007 Mokuleia TT - Gregg
My brother Gregg sporting a nice aero position, just needs to put in a little more work on the motor...

2007 Mokuleia TT - Ray
This is how you do it...a great aero TT position. Ray Brust (28:46) who started 1 min in back of me, passed my on the way back...

2007 Mokuleia TT - Me
Yours truly suffering on the way back to the finish. Luckly for me...several of the faster guys in my class weren't at the race...so...my ride was good enough for a 3rd place medal :-)

Syntace Streamliner Aerobar Pro Modification

After going through 1 pair of Profile aerobars and 3 pars of Syantace bars, C2 in medeium, C2 in small, and now this Streamliner in small, I still wasn't fully satisfied with how comfortable the bars were...and after some thinking...how comfortable they really could be.

Let me explain. For my riding style, wanted to be able to keep both hands together, overlaping each other, similar to how you could do with the REAL old-school Profile bars. However, no bar currently on the market is now built like those old bars.

Hence, I made the following PRO MODIFICATIONS!!!

First thing I did was replace the taller Syntace elbow pads with some lower 1/4" neoprene padding. This really helped in the comfort dept.

Syntace Streamliner with modified pads to bring arms more in line with the aerobar extensions.

The next thing I did was cut off upwards extension of the left hand aerobar. This allowed me to easily have both hands grip the right side extension, and still have very quick access to the front brake. (I always felt a little spooked that I couldn't quickly get to my front brake while in the aerobars without having to detour around the left extension.)

Removed left hand extension for quicker access to the front brakes and better aerodynamics!

After test riding with this mod, I feel a lot better with my reaction time. It also looks more aero. However, having that right extension facing to the right was still not "right."

Hence...now it's true HACK TIME. After some surgery with a pipe cutter a filed down wooden dowel and some caulking, I now have the extension facing to the Liberal LEFT!!!

Finished bar, rotated right side extension to the middle using a wooden dowel and some caulking.

I test rode the bar today and it is now really comfortable and by holding both hand together in the front of my face, I feel aero like a Super G downhill ski racer. Think "Floyd L."

From the hotseat, now I can pretty much put my hands together in a relaxed and symetrical way with being all molepoe...

I hope this helps in this weekend's first TT of the season...
